The album "Festival of the Holy Cross in Maaloula - Syria" by the Syrian photographer Ibrahim Malla will take part into the exhibition Memories of Mankind VII, which will be held in China in September. The album is also candidated for the Humanity Photo Grand Award, jointly organized by UNESCO and China Folklore Photographic Association. The 66 candidates who are invited in China for a week in order to attend the award ceremony, were selected among 2319 photographers from 116 countries. Ibrahim Malla is the first Syrian and the only one from Middle East to take part in such event.
For the year of 1432 Hijri, the first day of Ramadan was determined to be August 1, 2011.

Yousef Al-Azmeh (1883 – July 24, 1920) had the charge of Syrian Minister of war when he led a desperate and very unequal battle to defend Damascus against the French army of General Gouraud on July 24, 1920. Al-Azmeh, who was killed in the fighting, is considered today a marthyr of independence and a national hero.

Guess where...?
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) started a new project on Mar 31, during the works of the Global Community Safety and Resilience Forum. 50 trees were planted in Harasta, North-East of Damascus, in different areas, which were given the names of the continents. The project started in Syria but will be extended to all the countries.
The grandiose Umayyad mosque in the heart of Old Damascus at night shines among the blue lights of the churches.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (reported by UNDP) in Syria woman make up 49% of population and 45% of university students, however they represent less than 15% of the labour force. Al Nada association works to empower women to take part in the working life through vocational and training courses.

Cailin Fensham from South Africa won the Junior Friendship Show Jumping Tournament with a horse owned by Syrian Bassem Anzarouti. The tournament, which took place at Bassel al-Assad Shooting and Equestrian Club in Dimas (Damascus neighbourhood) saw the participation of young horse-back riders from Jordan, Lebanon, Denmark, Germany, France, South Africa and Syria.

Curiosity about Syria is usually focused by foreigners on the country's rich ancient history, however a recent interest about Syria's modern history is growing amongst audiences. On this line the American filmmaker Kevin Murphy produced a 55-min documentary named "Damascus", which examines the events that led to the formation of modern day Syria. The film is due to be released this coming spring in the US and Europe.

St. Moses the Abyssinian (Deir Mar Musa el-Habashi) overlooks a steep valley in the mountains around 80 km north of Damascus. Known since ancient times, the monastery is today home of an active community.
